Bars, Desserts and Karaoke

Joel and I typically spend our Friday nights at home, together on couch in our jammies. We snuggle up and catch up on the t.v. shows we like to watch together. Last night was no typical Friday night at the Bozell's. The Bozell's were not at home. The Bozell's went bar -hopping (actually we only hopped once). Our first stop was the Triangle Saloon in Muncie. I had read an article in the newspaper about the place--about the good food and unique ambiance, but what really piqued my interest is the fact that the bar also has a bakery! Uh, hello...a bakery in a bar? REALLY? (just the place for me!) We met up with some great friends, Ted and Amy. The decor was rustic and also retro, but not on purpose, and the food was delicious. The lady who owns the place treated us to some yummy desserts--cream cheese bars and German chocolate brownies. I had a tenderloin and so I was in deep-fried pork and complex carbs heaven. For the record, I did drink a long island iced tea and it packed a pretty good punch.

Ted and Amy enjoy doing/singing karaoke and the subject came up during dinner...oh no, I should have seen this coming. Backing up a bit...over a year ago, we met Ted and Amy for dinner and afterwards, found ourselves with them in a small bar in Redkey, Indiana (or as Ted calls it, Redneckey) for karaoke night. I had not been in a bar for over 20 years, so I felt completely out of place in the small town establishment. The bar was smokey and loud and well, there were some drunk people in there (imagine that). Anyway, we found ourselves back at the same bar last night. This time, I entered the place with an open mind and a positive attitude. We got seated and Ted and Amy went about the business of choosing their karaoke songs. The party had started. I must say, many of the singers were really good; some not so good but EVERYONE, good or bad, got cheers and applause. As a people-watcher, this was a great place for me to be. And this time, I felt comfortable and happy to be there. It wasn't long before Joel started talking about "what he could sing". I was floored--this coming from a man who said I would never find him singing publicly or "fast" dancing! He decided he would sing "Never My Love" by The Association which is a song he feels sums up his feelings about our relationship. Soon it was his turn....he walked away from our table saying, "I can't believe I'm doing this" and then the song started and that man sang beautifully. Yes, it was a little pitchy at times and yes, he got a little behind at times, but he did it! It wasn't long before Joel and I were chosing our duet song. We settled on Steve Miller's "Take the Money and Run". This was my first time singing karoke but it won't be my last. We had a ball! I don't know if it was terrible and I don't care. It was so much fun. Our evening ended with Joel and I "fast" dancing (did you see that coming?) to Ted's rap song, "Baby Got Back"(I Like Big Butts). I'm laughing as I type this...we had such a great time--a much needed escape from reality. Oh and one more thing...I got "hit on" by a much younger man who was not all that unfortunate-looking. He told me it took a lot of nerve for him to come ask me to dance. I told him I was flattered but that I only wanted to dance with my husband. (I'm laughing again)

We left the bar at 1:45AM (yes, this is still me talking) and then stopped at the Sunshine Cafe for breakfast. As we ate, we talked about all the possible song choices for our next duet on karaoke night (yes, this is still me talking). We got home at 3:15AM. and I thought it felt delightfully sinful. I know that going to a bar, and singing karaoke and coming in late is not really that big of a deal to most people. But, it was new to me and I felt liberated from my predictable, homebody, goody-2-shoes life.

I'm with Leasa but I would want to be in the crowd so I could APPLAUD your performance. What fun! I have never done that but think that after one long island ice tea or the equivalent, I could be persuaded. It is really great to step out of our boxes once in awhile. I can't wipe the smile off my face from reading this!

Hugs,
